Research:

As part of my research i look at pre-existing gown designs that could be adapt to make the robe for the sect.
first i started by looking at graduation gowns and the components that make up a graduation gown, its shape, form, dimensions, hoe it hangs on the body, and its overall look and appearance.

i then went on to think about the ideas behind what defines a gang, in the clothes that they wear.... 

for example some gangs all wear similar jackets/huddies with on e component in common, example shown in the image below: all the members of the gang are wearing a huddies with some form of line detaining down the sleeves of the huddie.

i also thought about adding accessories into the gown that all members of the sect could be wearing. 

for example, things such as caps or trainers (converse) that can be bought and worn in addition to the robe, but still symbolises that you are a member of some form of gang, sect or style/trend.
