Making my posts

Making My Posts

In order to display my gown i have made my own gold posts to go around my outfit

i was going to buy four of there bass posts to go around the outside of my exhibit, but they would have cost £46 each post, where i was able to make my own posts for £36 for the set.

In order to make my posts i used:
  •  2 sheets of MDF
  • plastic tube
  • wood
  • wooden deck balls
  • primer
  • gold spray paint
  • curtain hooks

How I did  I make my posts?

first I marked and cut out the bases for my posts to stand on. (1)
then  I cut the posts/plastic tube to the correct height for my design and put blocks of wood inside the tube s that i had something to screw the base and the ball into.
i then sanded the discs i had cut for the base of my posts. (2)
i them went on to screw all of it together, screwing the deck ball onto the top and the bases to the opposite end. (3)
t then panted the completed posts with 2 coats of primer.
and the sprayed them with gold spray paint.

Niksur Logo's

Niksur Logo created on the Computer

This is the Main Niksur Logo for the Main Reversible Niksur robe

Main logo- made out of fabric, blue, light blue, red & red cording

"Although i like this recreation of the Niksur logo, it was hard to maintain the shape of the circle, as the fabric wanted to return to its original square shape instead of a circle, therefore the crispness of the shape was compromised."

"The creation of the logo in this way was also repetitively time consuming, therefore i will look at finding a quicker and more manageable way to create more logos for the costume robes."

-          Think of other ways to create the logo

  • simplify the design
  • think about painting the design onto material, or using fabric pens
  • make the logo out of felt

Costume Niksur Logo made out of Felt

Felt logo-          Navy blue,light blue,red

How I Created the Felt Logo
I used the computer drawn version to draw up the templates onto thick cartridge paper, I then went onto draw design onto felt and then cutting it out and stick together.

"When creating the logo out of felt i still encountered a few problem, due to the delicate nature of the felt. for example, initially i cut the red piece out as i thin strip of felt but it frayed and broke, so i decided to cut the red section as a whole circle and make the light blue section the one that is cut to great the shaping within the logo."

"Overall by making the Costume Logos out of felt, is faster and easier, whilst still being a good quality representation of the original logo design "

Embellishment on Robe

Embellishment on my final robe

I have decided to add some embellishment to the sleeve of my final robe - I am going to add embellishment to imitate the stripes/patterns you of the see on the sleeves of gang huddies. e.g. the addidas stripes

some of my embellishment designs and ideas

The embellishment i have chosen for my final robe.

i chose this embellishment as it incorporated the idea of gang stripes on a hoodie as well as linking in with the 'N' of the 'Niksurites'

Research

Research:

As part of my research i look at pre-existing gown designs that could be adapt to make the robe for the sect.
first i started by looking at graduation gowns and the components that make up a graduation gown, its shape, form, dimensions, hoe it hangs on the body, and its overall look and appearance.

i then went on to think about the ideas behind what defines a gang, in the clothes that they wear....
for example some gangs all wear similar jackets/huddies with on e component in common, example shown in the image below: all the members of the gang are wearing a huddies with some form of line detaining down the sleeves of the huddie.

i also thought about adding accessories into the gown that all members of the sect could be wearing.

for example, things such as caps or trainers (converse) that can be bought and worn in addition to the robe, but still symbolises that you are a member of some form of gang, sect or style/trend.

Making the gown/robe's

Creating the main/reversible robe

Thinking about the design:
What I wanted to achieve from the design?
I wanted the design of this gown to be quite simple and have the ability to convert into something normal looking to conceal the identity of the sect from the public. therefore i went with the idea of the gown being revisable so that on the one side there is the red sect gown but on the alternative side there is a simple denim jacket and hoodie look.
Quality?
I wanted to maintain a very high quality of production and stitch throughout the creation of this robe, in order to best display all the ideas and things i have though about before creating the robe.
Style?
I wanted the gown to look regal yet quite modern, a variation on something that you may find on the high-street  that is why i made the robe within an standard denim jacket and hoodie.
Versatility?
I wanted the robe to be practical and easy to use/wear and turn inside out from what format to another.

Pattern for the main/reversible gown

Back left/right

Arm

Hood

These are the pattern's I used to cut out the fabric to create the main/reversible robe...
After working out the paper patterns for the robe I then drew them out onto the fabric and cut them out...
I then sewed up the robe making some minor alterations to the robe as I went to best tailor the robe to fit onside the reversible part of the outfit (denim jacket & hoodie)

Costume robe / ponchos

for the costume robe i came up with an easy yet effective design that is easy to pattern, easy to sew, relatively fast to make, imitates the shape of the main robe, is easy to take on and off for performances and can fit a range of sizes with ease

Ideas: Sect Costume

these were my initial ideas for the sect costume:

i wanted to create a long flowing robe....
possibly with a hood....

But then i started to look at modernising the sect gown as i thought my other ideas were to medieval and too much of a typical sect gown.

My final idea of the Sect costume:
A shortened yet free flowing gown, which i have chosen to give a hood as it adds an air of mystery and concealment to the costume.
I also chose to crop the sleeves to give it a modern edgy appeal an so that maisies body art could be seen

Concealing the robe within normal clothing

this shows hos the robe will be concealed within a normal denim jacket and hoodie, so that the jacket/robe can be secretly worn all the time and only revered to reveal the sects robe when reeded for sect business, meaning the sect can remain hidden, but easily accessible.
this images shows how the robe can be converted/reversed an easily changed into a normal looking outfit.
with the addition of personal items and a personal twist such as badges, buttons, ribbons etc.  the robe can be truly disguised into everyday society and blend in with normal everyday clothes.

I also decided to add the idea that all the members of the sect would wear a similar type shoe/trainer, it didn't particularly matter what colour the shoe/trainer was, but it would further reiterate the idea of belonging to a sect and having a uniform.

I chose for the photographs and for the project in general that the sect would all be wearing some form of converse trainer. converses are often warn by many people all the item in everyday life and therefore it would not look unusual for them to be warning them with the everyday normal side of the robe as well as establishing the idea of a uniform.

adding the ideas and intrigue of a riddle or code into the robe through colour coding the buttons on the everyday/normal side of the jacket.

I have colour coded the buttons on the front of the normal side of the robe...
the buttons are coloured: [Blue, Red, Blue, Blue, Red, Blue, Red, Blue]

My involvement in the project.

My involvement in the project

My involvement in the project is based around the costumes that the sect would have worn during a normal sect meeting, an also when the perform the sect rituals.

Things to consider, when designing the sect costume:
  • What time period is the sect set in ( will that reflect in the way i design the costume)?
  • Is there a new and an old element to the sect costume?
  • Where will my inspiration for my sect costume come from (past, present or future styles)?
  • What colour should the sect costume be?

Where to start with the project:
  • What is the form of my robe going to take?
  • Who will be wearing/who is it designed for?
  • Where do i need to source my materials from?
  • Where is my inspiration from?
  • Do i need to make pattern's to create my robe?
  • How long will it take to make each robe/time management?

The Context of our Project

The Context of our Project

"these are my initial notes on ideas that we can base our ideas off, these were rough note taken in class which i have used as a basis along with the context brief that Dem wrote up for us."

context brief from Dem:

*This is the story produced through the brainstorming session in class. Students decided on the following as a context for a future museum at Ruskin Hall.
(a) We have concluded that our building in the distant future exists as a museum.
(b) Its name (pending) is: The Ruskin Experience, the fall of the Niksurites
(c) It is said that in it’s time Ruskin Hall had a lot more going on than just your average art school. In 2013, a scandal took over the news for months as police and journalists unraveled evidence that students from the art and design course were running a secret sect called Niksurites (derives from ‘Ruskin’ in reverse).
Inside, investigators found secret spaces, objects, visual material and accounts of the events that took place…
A museum has now been created in the year 3089 where visitors can experience what it was like being part of the sect 1,076 years ago. Time has blurred truth from fiction and many stories have been told since…what is true and what isn’t still remains a mystery.

Based on the research (trips, presentations, films and discussions) you are now ready to start developing ideas within this context. For the next session, I would like to see evidence of ideas from you. This can be in any way you prefer for example, you may choose to show a body of research or a series of sketches or mock ups. Though these are not your final ideas, I expect to see good evidence of how you have drawn from all the input so far.

Project Brief: "I Guarantee you will see"

Project Brief: "I Guarantee you will see"

this is a copy of our initial project brief given to us by Demitrios:

Project Description

As our art school enters it’s final months of occupancy, Ruskin Hall, our
building, situated in the placid Quaker village of Bournville, will soon become
a distant memory.

As you are the ‘de facto’ and ‘legitimate’ bearers of the final memories of
Ruskin Hall School of Art and Design, your project is to produce a tourist attraction or theme park set in the distant future where tourists will pay to
experience ‘a day in the life of Ruskin Hall’.

You will work individually, producing one aspect of the theme park. As a group,
you will need to be conscious of your colleagues developments as all ideas must
be combined into one attraction.

The final assessment will consist of a ‘live’ running of the park, Demitrios and
Lisa will turn up as demanding and eager paying tourists; it will be your
responsibility to ensure that they have an unforgettable experience. You can use
any medium you like (painting, performance, sculpture, video, photography,
machine, costume, print, text, sound, food etc.)

Objectives:
  • Produce a body of individual research critical to your idea. You should continue to cross reference your ideas with additional research up until the final outcome is complete.

  • Produce a range of sketches, models or prototypes to test the suitability of your ideas

  • Produce at least 5 renderings of your idea using the ‘Disney style’ of painting and drawing. You will find a pdf document with a range of these examples that you can reference. You can use any medium you like to produce these (water based paints, markers, pencils, crayons etc.). In any medium, produce your final piece to a high standard.

Things to consider:
  • How can you keep someone entertained whilst at same time being educated without even realising?

  • How can you ‘exploit’ the unreliability of memory to your advantage and create compelling stories and legends visitors will love to hear time and time again? For example: Has Walt Disney really been cryogenically frozen and kept under Disneyland’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” attraction, awaiting the day when science can repair the damage to his body and bring ‘Uncle Walt’ back to life?’

  •  Visit or try to remember your own experiences when you visited a theme park. How did you feel? What was your most favorite part? What do you expect from such places?

  •  Are you more of a parade person, waving to the onlookers as your float drives by at 2mph or are you behind the scenes creating wax models and statues of famous hero’s and characters? Do you see yourself creating souvenirs of all shapes and sizes or could you be an actor as part of a scheduled re-enactment? Do you set up and take the pictures for visitors in a themed scene or do you prefer to wear a costume that never stops smiling at people? Do you prefer wearing a big yellow bow tie, big white smile, enthusiastically touring a crowd of visitors or do you create deliciously themed lollipops? Or perhaps you are more like a historian, researching and writing ‘objective’ memoirs which in the end are nothing but ‘subjective’? Do you see yourself as a director, filming scenes from older decades; editing and skewing the footage so people marvel at a past that was nothing less than glorious and righteous? Perhaps you produce photographs or paint murals on the walls or do you record the sounds and smells from the past and preserve them for the future?
